Compare the Costs
Aluminum vs Steel

Purchasing a horse trailer today is very complicated, with all the features and the structural options out there. One very large myth is a steel trailer is less expensive than an aluminum trailer. The comparison below is designed to help consumers understand the complete continuing cost associated with steel trailers and the relative low cost of maintaining an aluminum trailer. Don't get me wrong, I sold one of the industries best steel trailers for years, and the initial cost is lower, but that is not where it ends. If you have any questions Email Us.

The second big myth about steel trailers is that they are stronger, "in the event of an accident my animals will be safer". Think about it... most steel trailers have a wooden floor; imagining a side impact, would you rather have a wooden floor or an interlocking, welded to the frame floor? When you consider the aluminum floor system normally runs from side to side of a trailer, if you do receive a side impact, you are running into the ends of the interlocking floor.

10 Year Life Cycle of Cost: Steel vs. Aluminum

DESCRIPTION ALUMINUM STEEL
Capital Cost: $12,875 $10,161
Florida Sales Tax 773 610
Paint Exterior 0 2,000
Floor Replacement 0 1,500
Acid Wash 220 0
Repair Cost(excluding Tires & Bulbs) 200 800
Interest Cost($2,714@10yrs) 1,357 0
Road Use Tax(4000vs6100lbs) 280 450
Fuel Cost 0 +20%
Total Cost $15,705 $15,521
Trade-In Value $7,500 $2,000
Net Cost(Total Cost - Trade-In) $8,205 $13,521

Assumptions: Florida Taxes, the cost of welding repair of aluminum is 20% higher. However, the added cost to repaint even one side of a steel trailer, will more than offset the cost to repair aluminum. Both examples are 3H production trailers. Fuel cost is such a variable but minimally it will take 20% more to pull the heavier steel trailer. Additionally, there is the possibility of needing a heavier duty truck to pull the steel trailer.
